FCT School for the Blind Children
On June 6th, in Abuja, Nigeria, our TOP volunteers helped distribute food, supplies, and daily necessities to the children at FCT School for the Blind Children. The items were selected based on the school’s specific needs, identified through direct communication with the staff. Supplies ranged from drinks and snacks to musical instruments like recorders and saxophones in support of the school’s music program. Volunteers received a unique and memorable opportunity to interact with both students and staff, gaining a deeper understanding of local culture and lifestyle.
Apple Accessibility Outreach Day at Vista Center
The TOP was incredibly grateful for the opportunity to volunteer in support of our community while working alongside Apple’s Accessibility team.
During the event, volunteers assisted with welcoming attendees, coordinating activities, supporting accessibility technology demonstrations, and helping participants explore inclusive features. Volunteers also helped guide guests through interactive learning experiences, answered questions, distributed resources, and worked together to create a welcoming and accessible environment for all community members. Vista Center for the Bline and Visually Impaired is the premier service provider for people who are blind or have low vision from ages 3 to 103, offering a complete range of rehabilitative services to residents of the Bay Area and beyond. Vista Center empowers individuals who are blind or visually impaired to embrace life to the fullest through evaluation, counseling, education and training. The TOP corporates with Vista Center to provide volunteer services to the community. The volunteer activities in Vista Center are range from client partnership, events, research and more.
Vista Center Programs & Services includes:
- Low Vision Clinic: Specialized Low Vision Optometrists evaluate clients to recommend tools and services that fit their individual needs.
- Adult Services: Empowering training programs and recreational activities for adults who are blind or have low vision.
- Youth Programs: Educational and social opportunities specifically designed for students living with vision loss.
- School Services: Vista Center provides individualized services to meet each student’s educational needs.
- Community & Corporate: Partnership opportunities for local organizations and businesses that engage the community through education, advocacy and accessibility
- Support Services: Mental health programs and activities for youth and adults who are blind or have low vision
The TOP founder played an important role in creating and promoting the braille book project, designing the braille book, including the illustrations and scripts, with the goal of making the book accessible and engaging for visually impaired readers.
In addition to designing the book, the TOP organized a Braille Book Making event that brought high school volunteer together to participate in the process. The event provided an opportunity for participants to learn about braille, contribute to the creation of the books, and support greater accessibility and inclusion in the community.
All of the braille books and braille holiday cards created through the project were brought to FCT Blind School in Abuja Africa and donated to the school. The students were excited to receive the braille books and holiday cards and eagerly looked forward to exploring the books by reading them through touch. Their enthusiasm demonstrated the meaningful impact that accessible educational resources can have. This project not only provided valuable materials but also helped create a sense of connection, inclusion, and joy for students who may have limited access to braille resources.
To share love and joy across borders, TOP Braille Cards Drive project organizes its members to design and create Braille greeting cards for students at schools for the visually impaired in both our local community and Nigeria. Each card is carefully handcrafted and includes heartfelt messages written in both print and Braille, allowing students to feel the warmth of the greetings through touch.
This project not only celebrates holidays such as Christmas, Lunar New Year, and Thanksgiving, but also helps raise awareness about Braille literacy and the daily challenges faced by visually impaired students.
Through this meaningful activity, our volunteers learn empathy, creativity, and the power of inclusion—spreading kindness one card at a time.
TOP organized a braille orientation at Yangfan Academy for elementary school students to introduce them to the basics of braille and raise awareness about the importance of accessible communication. During the session, students learned about what braille is, how it is read through touch, and how many people around the world rely on braille for reading and communication.
The orientation was designed to be interactive and engaging. Students actively participated throughout the presentation, eagerly raising their hands to answer questions and share their thoughts. Their enthusiasm and curiosity created a positive learning environment and helped them develop a greater understanding of the experiences and needs of people who are blind or visually impaired.
TOP also introduced the students to the process of creating braille cards through a hands-on activity. After learning the basics of braille, the students had the opportunity to design and create their own braille holiday cards. They carefully incorporated braille into their designs, combining creativity with what they had learned during the orientation. This activity allowed students to move beyond simply learning about braille and experience firsthand how it can be used to communicate meaningful messages.
The TOP ReCycling Project is one of TOP’s ongoing community initiatives that combines environmental protection with social impact. Our goal is to reduce waste, promote sustainable living, and raise funds to support schools for the visually impaired—both locally and abroad.
In California, beverage containers with the “CRV” (California Refund Value) label can be recycled for cash refunds. By collecting these plastic bottles and aluminum cans, we not only help minimize landfill waste and lower disposal costs, but also turn recyclables into meaningful donations that fund educational resources, Braille materials, and daily supplies for visually impaired students.
✅ How you can help:
- Collect plastic bottles and aluminum cans with the CRV mark (look for “CA CRV” or “California Redemption Value” on the label).
- Make sure the containers are empty, clean, and not crushed.
- Drop them off at TOP’s designated collection sites or during community recycling events.
Every bottle and can counts — together, we can protect our planet and brighten the future for visually impaired students, one recycle at a time.
